Acts chapters 6 and 7 are the only places in the New Testament where Stephen and his 

martyrdom are mentioned. It is a relatively short reference to this man’s life and his death as 

the first Christian martyr, but it is enough to tell us about the heart of a committed disciple of 

Christ. If you have time, read the entirety of Acts 7 to better understand Stephen’s heart and 

the context of his death. What stands out to you about the way Stephen is described and the 

choices he makes? How do you think he came to be such a person? What must he have 

known and believed about love?
